How to deal with heat rash during a heat wave

Is heat rash driving you mad?

It’s little wonder. Phoenix Park provisionally recorded the highest temperature since its weather station opened in the early 1800s, reaching 33.0°C on Monday 18th July 2022 around 3:30pm, which is: 8°C above its long-term average (LTA).

So how to deal with those irritating, prickly red bumps that occur when the skin’s sweat glands become blocked and the sweat can no longer reach the surface of the skin?

The resulting inflammation brings on a rash of tiny red bumps or blisters on the skin that can be itchy and irritating.

They can often occur in skin folds and tight clothing (or nappies in infants) where air circulation is poor.

Heat rash is also known as prickly heat or miliaria and really only disperses when the body has cooled down. While it might be difficult to avoid hot, humid conditions during the summer, heat rash can be prevented by wearing loose, cotton clothing and using fans to circulate the air.

It is important to pay attention to your skincare products as artificial fragrances and chemicals can irritate skin and make the effects of heat rash much worse. While some products may claim to calm and soothe irritated skin, be sure to check the ingredients label first to identify additives that are known to strip or block pores and inhibit the skin’s ability to regulate its moisture levels.

Enjoy cool showers with natural cleansers, lightly towel dry skin and follow with a light, non-greasy body lotion that calms redness and irritation. Avoid the use of petroleum-based products that may feel thick and smooth on application but are known to block pores and restrict the skin’s ability to breathe.

Petroleum products are especially popular for use on infants’ irritated skin to create a barrier, however, they create further blockages and in fact make the effects of heat rash much worse.

Looking after your body and minimising the effects of heat-induced skin conditions like heat rash is made much easier when you opt for natural skin care solutions. Not only will they save you time, money and hassle your body will look and feel better with the nourishment of mother nature’s gifts.
