Why Rosemary is ideal for dermatitis, acne, eczema and psoriasis

With its aromatic, pine-like scent, mood-calming effects and powerful antioxidant properties, Rosemary is a time-honoured herb used throughout history for a variety of illnesses and ailments. Rosemary oil is also known to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses on the skin, and combined with properties that encourage cell rejuvenation, is ideal for sufferers of dermatitis, acne, eczema or psoriasis.

Rosemary’s health benefits lie in its profound antioxidant qualities. It is widely recognised for reducing anxiety and providing a calming effect, improving memory and is often used as a pain reliever. It is widely believed to help with arthritis and inflammation and to boost the immune system, improve circulation and aid digestion.  It is even thought it may play a role in cancer prevention.

Rosemary is a rich source of iron, calcium and vitamin B6 that when absorbed through the skin can support the immune system as well as the development of collagen and reduction of free radicals. It is also packed with manganese which is well known to help reduce wrinkles and reduce the signs of ageing.

As any sufferer of dermatitis, acne, eczema or psoriasis will tell you, the itch, inflammation and in some cases pain that goes with these skin conditions can be maddening, which is why the gentle anti-inflammatory and rejuvenating properties of Rosemary work so well on problem skin.

In history, Rosemary was used widely by Ancient Greek students to combat exam stress, they would adorn themselves with rosemary believing the scent would boost their memory. Today, it is believed that the scent has some effect on reducing the stress hormone cortisol.

A 14th century manuscript reveals rosemary steeped in wine vinegar was used to wash the feet of a thief in the belief that it would sap his desire to steal again in the future. It was  also used to ward off witchcraft and evil on the road in 18th century Spain, while it was highly sought-after for its protective qualities during the bubonic plague in 17th century England.
