What’s in it: Shea Butter

* Part of the Bee Loved series on active ingredients.

At Bee Loved we adore the nourishing and skin smoothing effects of Shea Butter.

Hailed as a superfood for skin, is derived from the seed the Shea (Karite) tree which is native to 19 countries across Africa’s dry savannah regions including Burkina Faso, Chad, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

Evidence found in a medieval village in Bukina Faso suggests Shea Butter was produced as early as the 14th century.

Shea Butter is extracted from the seed of the Shea fruit, with tart, plum-like flesh that encases the oil rich seed. It comprises five key fatty acids – palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and arachidic – and is well regarded for its high levels of antioxidants which are particularly effective in skincare for fighting free radicals which contribute to the signs of ageing.

Shea Butter is a powerful moisturiser for dry skin and is used widely in skincare as an emollient.

Research shows Shea is very effective in reducing skin inflammation. It also supports the skin’s collagen production, softening skin and helping to reduce wrinkles.

Bee Loved uses Shea Butter in a number of its lotions and creams, both to soften and moisturise skin and to nourish sensitive and inflamed skin, particularly skin affected by atopic dermatitis and eczema.
